The insert that accompanies the FDC tells us that, because the land bridge between Ireland and Europe was submerged after the last Ice Age, there are few species native to Ireland. In fact, "Ireland has only three species of amphibian and one reptile . . . the Common Frog, Natterjack Toad, Smooth Newt and the Common Lizard. The frog is common and widespread in Ireland, but the Natterjack Toad is found only at a few locations in Co. Kerry."
