This stamp was issued on the sesquicentennial of the death of Mathais Claudius (1740-1815). His poem "Death and the Maiden" was set to music by Franz Schubert. He was also the editor of Der Wandsbecker Bothe, a newspaper, which is mentioned on the stamp, and for which the owl and hat with three frogs seem to have been a logo.

Issued in both West Germany and West Berlin, this set of four stamps illustrates the Grimm Brothers' "The Frog King." The stamps illustrated here are for the Berlin issue (Scott 9NB 41-44), as is evidenced by the "Bundespost Berlin" on the bottom margin; the "Berlin" is missing on the other set.
