The back of the cover tells of the origin of the expression "raining cats and dogs": "Jonathan Swift--author and caustic social critic--published in 1738 a piece entitled "Polite Conversations." A satirical commentary on society's pretensions, "Conversations" featured a parade of characters who used ridiculous and nonsensical phrases in an effort to appear sophisticated and worldly-wise. It also marked the debut of the phrase "raining cats and dogs." A phrase without context, the expression soon came to mean a torrential thunderstorm."
